Matt Riddle cut from the UFC after second positive test for marijuana

Last week, Matt Riddle talked about how he mended fences with UFC brass over his positive test for marijuana. This week? He tested positive again and lost his job. According to MMA Junkie, Riddle tested positive for marijuana after his UFC on Fuel 7 bout with Che Mills, and was then cut from the UFC. Riddle also tested positive at UFC 149.

While it's true that Riddle has a medical marijuana card in Nevada, he knew full well that the UFC tested for the drug. Whether that drug should be banned is not the point. It is, Riddle knows it's banned, and Riddle broke the rules.

If your boss banned red shirts for no reason at all and you were suspended for wearing your favorite red shirt to work, are you going to wear it again? Yes, you can talk about how your boss is crazy for banning red shirts and work to change his mind on red shirts, but you can't wear the shirt and expect to slide by.

It's also important for UFC fighters to walk the line these days as the promotion looks to trim their roster. UFC president Dana White recently noted that they have approximately 100 fighters to trim from their roster. Riddle made it too easy for them to pick his name.

UPDATE: The UFC released a statement on Riddle's release, which reads in full:

Matthew Riddle tested positive for marijuana metabolites following his bout at UFC on FUEL TV 7 in London, England on February 16, 2013. This is Riddle?s second failed drug test for marijuana within the past seven months. Riddle previously failed a post-fight drug test due to marijuana following his UFC 149 victory over Chris Clements.

As such, the UFC organization is exercising its right to terminate Riddle for breach of his obligations under his Promotional Agreement as well as the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy. The UFC organization has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents. The outcome of the bout against Che Mills was changed to a no contest and the results of the positive test will be reported to the official Association of Boxing Commissions MMA record-keeper.

The Power of Purposeful Motherhood | Mom Heart

momheart-kat-kid-race

They say it?s hard to know the value of something unless you?ve had to live without it.

If that?s true, I might be an expert on the value of a mother. If you haven?t heard it before, here is my motherhood story.

I know what an amazing impact a mother?s presence (and absence) has on her children. As I often like to say, ?You are a Mom. You?re kind of a big deal.?

You are planting oaks of righteousness that will impact generations to come.

You have been entrusted by the God of all creation to lead His most tender, valuable and vulnerable ones.

You have been given the task of teaching tomorrow?s thought leaders, business owners and world changers.

That is no small thing. To whom much is given, much is required.

Motherhood is powerful, may we be women of purpose.

My husband and I love to travel.

Shortly after we were married, when we were dirt poor, we scrounged together enough money for plane tickets to France. My father-in-law was living there at the time and his whole side of the family is from there. We worked hard, saved hard and planned hard. As a result, for very little money, we were able to tour France, visit Germany and make a lifetime of memories.

A few years later, when we were in the midst of raising babies, I leaned over to Jimmy at church and whispered, ?Let?s go on vacation.?

He leaned back and said, ?Okay???

I replied, ?Today.?

So we went home, put the kids down for a nap, packed, put the littles in the car and headed North. We had great dreams of making it all the way to Nashville, but after 6 hours in the car we stopped in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

It was a fun little trip and we?ve since gone back, but the point of this little tale is that we go SO much farther when we plan.

France or Arkansas? Are we mothering by the seat of our pants or are we being planned and purposeful?

Planning doesn?t have to be complex or restricting. It can be as simple as listing 12 areas we want to grow in and working on one each month.

Read books, ask other mothers, attend seminars and scour the earth for every resource you can find on that topic that month. Dive in and incite habit changes in your life.

The next month, go deeper or move on. The point is we must be purposeful and have a plan, however simple, in order to go.

If I want to be a painter, I spend time with a master painter. If I want to be a tennis player, I spend time with a tennis pro. If I want to be a singer, I spend time with a voice instructor.

And if I want to be an expert on my children?s hopes, dreams, needs, fears and faith, then I need to spend time with the One who breathed life into them and knows the very hairs on their head.

momheart-kat-kids

Being purposeful is wonderful, plans are powerful, but all of that is secondary to learning from the author of Life.

I love what Katie Davis, a 19 year old prom queen who moved to Uganda and adopted 13 children (!!), says when people ask her how she does it. She says, ?It?s just a little bit of coffee and a WHOLE lot of Jesus.?

Friends, I can?t make my children love God. I do not have a formula for raising obedient, compassionate world changers.

On my own, on our own, we are utterly powerless, but each morning, afternoon, evening and every moment in between we have a direct connection to the Great I Am, the Almighty Maker of Heaven and Earth, the God of the Impossible.

He makes motherhood possible, purposeful and powerful. He chose you to be a Mom. You?re kind of a big deal?

Accused former Vt. college president kills self

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) -- The former acting president of a small Vermont liberal arts college killed himself amid an investigation into the embezzlement of $440,000 in school funds, state police said Thursday.

Former acting Southern Vermont College President James Beckwith died Wednesday in his Londonderry home of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Beckwith was accused of taking the money between October 2012 and January while serving as acting president of the small liberal arts school in Bennington. Authorities said he deposited the money into his personal account, using $260,000 to pay down two mortgages.

The U.S. attorney's office said earlier Thursday it filed a complaint alleging the home and account are forfeitable as proceeds of mail fraud and as property involved in money laundering.

Prosecutors said Beckwith, 58, had college officials issue three checks to Merrill Lynch, saying they were to settle legal claims arising from a failed dormitory project. But the checks for $100,000, $160,000 and $180,000 were deposited into a personal account Beckwith had with Merrill Lynch, prosecutors said.

A recent audit of the college's finances for the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2012, found several suspicious financial transactions involving purported vendor payments by Beckwith, the U.S. attorney's office said.

When questioned about the matter, Beckwith resigned on Feb. 3. The $180,000 from the third check remains in the Merrill Lynch account.

The college sent an email to faculty and students saying it was saddened by Beckwith's unexpected death, said school president Karen Gross.

"This is a difficult and sad time for all of us who knew Jim. His many contributions to our community will be remembered," said Gross wrote.

The college met with faculty on Thursday and planned to meet with students Thursday night to discuss the unexpected death and the civil complained filed by the U.S. government.

Beckwith had been chief financial officer and chief operating officer of the college since 2007. He served as acting president while Gross was on one-year leave.

The college has about 550 students.

Movie about Bruce Lee?s most legendary fight is in the works

Bruce Lee obtained legendary status as a martial artist in part because of a 1965 fight in Oakland, Calif., against Chinese kung fu master Wong Jack Man. It was the last fight of Lee's career.

For nearly 50 years, there has been much speculation and heated debate about what occurred inside of that gym, as very few people witnessed it. But the upshot of the bout is that it helped to develop Lee's views on Jeet Kune Do, which is the forerunner of today's mixed martial arts.

On Tuesday, Deadline.com reported that a movie about the fight that will be called "Birth of the Dragon" will be produced by QED International and Groundswell Productions.

[Also: Courageous Liz Carmouche open about sexual orientation]

Groundswell CEO Michael London told Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday that the process of developing a screenplay has just begun.

It is not, however, designed to be a biography of Lee, who died in 1973, or the definitive account of the fight.

"We're actually not trying to re-tell the story of Bruce Lee," London said. "I think that's a natural impression people might get. The idea, actually, is to take that battle, which has been so mysterious and so powerful and so interesting to so many, and tell the lead-up to that story, which is Wong Jack Man's arrival in San Francisco.

"We've created a back story. There is a lot people that know about why Wong Jack Man came to San Francisco, but we're trying to create a dramatically satisfying story about why he's there. So we're taking license. That's why we say it's going to be inspired by that fight and isn't a literal telling of it."

London said the writers -- Christopher Wilkinson and Stephen Rivele -- have the belief that Jack Man was trying to help Lee to become the best version of himself and was trying to teach Lee lessons.

London said the fight sequences will be shown through the eyes of the people who were there. One of those was Lee's wife, Linda, who was eight months pregnant at the time with the couple's son, Brandon.

"There will be a slightly stylized quality to the actual fight sequences," London said. "That will allow different people who were there to come away with differing conclusions of what happened. ... The whole idea is that the 13 people who saw that fight came away with very differing ideas of what happened. The fight itself will be impressionistic."

[Also: UFC's Matt Riddle wants to push for change on pot ban]

Jack Man is reclusive and rarely does interviews and has rarely spoken of that fight. London said producers will approach him after finishing the screenplay. He said he hasn't reached out to Lee's family, either.

Lee's daughter, Shannon, who runs the Bruce Lee Foundation, said that the fight was significant in her father's life because of the impact it had upon him.

Shark-eating whales? Scientists identify four new whale species

Teeth of a fossilized whale called 'Willy' are severely worn down, suggesting that this previously unknown species of whale may have eaten large animals like sharks.

By Douglas Main,?Our Amazing Planet / February 19, 2013

These teeth, from one of the whale fossils found by Meredith Rivin and her fellow researchers, suggest the size of the extinct whales. Teeth are much harder than bone, so resist the ravages of geologic time better than bones do.

Fossils uncovered during construction of a roadway in Southern California have revealed four new species of ancient whales, according to research presented here at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on Sunday (Feb. 17).

One of the species, dubbed "Willy," is much larger than the others and may have eaten sharks, said Meredith Rivin, a paleontologist at the Cooper Archaeological and Paleontological Center in Fullerton, Calif., and part of the team that studied the fossils.

The fossils were excavated a decade ago, but are only now giving up their secrets, in part because it takes so long to separate the fossils from the rocks, Rivin said. "For the last 10 years? I've been trying to 'free Willy,'" Rivin said.

Whale teeth

These animals were toothed, baleen whales, and swam the oceans from about 17 million to 19 million years ago, Rivin said. That's quite a surprise, since this group was thought to have gone extinct about 5 million years earlier, she said.

Most of the world's largest whales belong to a suborder called Mysticeti, which all use a structure called baleen to filter food from the oceans. Their earliest ancestors, however, had teeth. Although these four species of whale don't appear to be direct relatives of modern baleen whales, they may represent transitional forms between the earlier toothed whales and toothless baleen whales, Rivin said. Modern baleen whales like fin whales have teeth only as embryos; the teeth are reabsorbed long before birth, she added.

All modern whales evolved from a single type of land mammal about 55 million years ago, Rivin said. These animals were quite small, about the size of a modern golden retriever, she noted. ?

How To Sell A Car To The Mobile-First Generation | TechCrunch

I?m shopping for a car right now. Just something that can handle a little city driving and frequent trips to the cottage in the warmer months, with the ability to haul a decent amount of cargo. I?m weighing factors like size, fuel economy, engine power, cargo space and FWD vs. AWD, but for my purposes most of those points are relatively moot; I really just need something to get me from A to B. But I find myself more concerned with the in-car entertainment system, and how it works with my mobile device of choice.

I?m far from a car buff, so my priorities might not line up with those of actual automotive enthusiasts, but my smartphone is no less important to me on the road as off. In fact, in many ways it?s more important in a vehicle I?ll be using mostly for long highway drives and the occasional commute caught in traffic. From experience with Zipcar and rentals, I know that the difference between a car that plays nice with my iPhone versus one that doesn?t can mean the difference between a pleasant trip that leaves me feeling rested and relaxed, and a frustrating journey that just ends up fraying my nerves.

Here?s what I want from an in-car entertainment system in terms of how it handles a smartphone connection, in both an incarnation that should be fully possible given today?s technology, and one that?s maybe less realistic but more ideal:

  • Option 1: A Bluetooth or hardwired connection that recognizes that at this stage in the game, there are many more ways to get audio on an Android or iOS-based device than via a locally stored library, and is prepared to handle that. So no confusion when my iPhone is using iTunes Match, Rdio or Spotify instead of a local library; retain the ability to change tracks, recognize metadata for all content, and handle functions like skipping tracks without erratic behavior. I?m fine with an in-car system leaving the heavy lifting to my smartphone of choice and acting mostly as a dumb pipe, but at this stage in the game, we don?t have to be more-frustrating-than-a-simple-aux-connection dumb.
  • Option 2: Custom, target-OS based systems that aren?t car manufacturers-specific, but cater instead to the two dominant mobile operating systems, Android and iOS. This would essentially involve Apple and Google coming in and saying, forget SYNC, forget QNX, forget whatever else you?re doing, let?s put iOS or Android in cars for a perfectly seamless experience with a user?s existing device, apps and services. As far as I?m concerned SYNC and other?manufacturer-proprietary systems are little better than heavy-handed, often confusing chromes layered on top of functionality that mobile OSes already do perfectly well on their own. Just throw an iPad mini in the dash.

Car makers are taking steps in the latter direction, with Siri integration coming to cars from a number of manufacturers?including?GM, Honda, Audi and more. But this is still taking the form of integrations with existing systems like Chevy?s MyLink, which in my opinion are about as friendly and necessary as overwrought manufacturer skins plopped unceremoniously on top of stock Android.

Cars that run Android were among the trends spotted at CES this year, but companies have been demoing in-vehicle Android for a while now. The problem is that you often won?t recognize it. What car manufacturers need to realize is that mobile tech has answered a lot of the same problems they have when it comes to navigation apps, in-car entertainments and utility software in ways that don?t require much rethinking or translation. Taking steps to minimize driver distraction is obviously one thing, but from my experience with SYNC and the rest, that hardly ends up being a core focus on most car-focused interface-design choices, so it?s a thin argument for sticking with the existing direction most are headed in.

A user?s mobile device affects more and more of their lifestyle choices, resulting in the rich ecosystems we see out there today for accessories and appliances that are compatible with iOS and Android. Car makers need to realize this isn?t just a nice-to-have for consumers going forward, but an actual top-tier priority. In other words, the first person to build me a car that replaces the dash entertainment system outright with an iPad (as a standard, factory-installed option) wins.

Pac-12 reprimands Montgomery for shoving player

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) ? California coach Mike Montgomery was reprimanded by the Pac-12 on Monday for shoving one of his own players in the chest during a game.

The conference did not announce what specific punishment Montgomery received for his actions Sunday night, although he will not be suspended.

"While emotions can run high in competitive environments, Pac-12 coaches are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will reflect credit on the institution and the conference," Commissioner Larry Scott said. "Each Pac-12 coach must be aware that they are an example to student-athletes and other students, and consistent with this influence and visibility, must meet a particularly high standard."

The confrontation happened during a timeout early in the second half of Cal's 76-68 win over Southern California on Sunday night when Montgomery yelled at star guard Allen Crabbe for nonchalant play and then shoved him in the chest with both hands.

Montgomery downplayed the run-in immediately after the game but later issued an apology through the school. On Monday, he acknowledged he went too far trying to get his star player out of a funk.

"I made a mistake," he said in an interview with Pac-12 Networks. "There's no question about that. Allen is so important to us. There's a lot of pressure on Allen. He's got to perform for us. People are holding him, they're pushing for him, they're physical with him. It's very difficult for him. He, like everybody else, I'm sure he gets tired of that.

"Sometimes he tends to take himself out a little bit. Yet for us, he's our leader. We can't play if Allen is not engaged. To his credit, he generally has been but in this particular game I thought he was a little bit out of it."

Crabbe had to be forcibly restrained by teammates and briefly left the court before coming back and leading a comeback victory for the Golden Bears (16-9, 8-5 Pac-12).

Athletic Director Sandy Barbour said in a statement late Sunday night that she understood the game was emotional but Montgomery's actions were inappropriate.

"It is unacceptable for our coaches to have physical contact with student-athletes regardless of the circumstances," she said. "The second-half incident was certainly out of character for Mike Montgomery, and I am confident that something like this will not happen again."

Montgomery tried to make light of the controversy in the postgame news conference, smiling and saying the move motivated Crabbe. He also said he would do it again.

"Worked, didn't it?" Montgomery said of the exchange with Crabbe. "Allen had come down twice went to the wrong side of the court and his guy shot two 3s. I was trying to get him going. Probably overdid it a little bit but Allen's my guy. We can't win if he is not ready to play."

Crabbe, the leading scorer in the Pac-12 with an average of 19.8 points, scored 14 points after the shove and led the Bears back from a 15-point deficit to win.

Montgomery later apologized in a statement released by the school.

"I have great passion for this game and tonight, I let my emotions get away from me in the heat of the moment," Montgomery said. "While my intent was to motivate our student-athletes, my behavior was inappropriate and I apologize for my actions."

Crabbe said after the game that emotions were high at the time and Montgomery was just trying to motivate him.

"Everything's fine," Crabbe said. "It's under the bridge. He's my coach, no hard feelings. We're just going to keep moving on."

Egypt telecoms authority says can't block YouTube

(AP) ? An Egyptian rights group and the nation's telecommunication's ministry have filed appeals to reverse a court order to block YouTube.

Last week, a judge ordered the government to block access to the video-sharing website for 30 days for its carrying of an anti-Islam video that set off deadly riots last year.

The ministry said this week it cannot block access to YouTube because of high technical costs, adding that it cannot legally monitor the content of social media websites.

The Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression in Egypt said Saturday that it too filed an appeal, calling the verdict "collective punishment."

YouTube has already blocked access to the film in Egypt because it broke local laws.

Past Egyptian verdicts banning websites deemed offensive were similarly not implemented.
